Our Approach

& Caregivers

We care about you as a person — what’s important to you, where you most need help and support, your health goals, your life goals. We couple this understanding with deep medical expertise and knowledge about your particular diagnosis and our awareness of what you’re likely to experience as you or your loved one goes through conventional treatment.

With this understanding, we then provide you with highly-personalized recommendations and links to evidence-based information as well as integrative medicine and supportive services that will make your life easier and more fulfilling throughout your healing journey.

Health Organizations
& Employers

The TruePath team brings decades of experience working for world-class healthcare systems (Beth Israel Deaconess, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, UCSF, Optum) combined with highly-respected and leading integrative medicine knowledge and expertise.

We understand the inherent constraints healthcare faces in treating the whole person: insufficient time, funding, infrastructure. And yet, we also believe that optimal outcomes are only possible when the unique needs and values of each individual are addressed and respected.

Cancer is a disease that severely alters every aspect of a person’s life: the physical, the emotional, the spiritual, and the practical. Conventional cancer treatment is only one small piece of the healing puzzle and, at times, prescribed treatments actually contribute to the pain and chaos of the situation.

Our HIPAA-compliant, patent-pending intelligent digital SaaS platform is customizable to complement your organization’s current medical offerings so that we can work together to provide more holistic healing care to your patients or employees. The result is better health outcomes, increased satisfaction and reduced costs.

About Us

THE VISION FOR TRUEPATH emerged 10+ years ago when our founder, Julie Wheelan, was diagnosed with stage 3.5 colorectal cancer. Julie was 38-years-old at the time, with a husband and two young children (ages 1 and 5) and a flourishing career in marketing. Facing a daunting prognosis, Julie knew she needed to look beyond conventional medicine to other healing practices that could help optimize her chances of survival. And so, with deep determination and resourcefulness, she researched, vetted, and pieced together holistic healing support for herself and her family that included services such as nutrition counseling, exercise coaching, guided imagery, acupuncture, massage, horse therapy, jin shin jyutsu, and more.

After completing treatment, Julie went on to partner with leading oncologist, Dr. David Gullion, in co-founding Marin General Hospital’s Center for Integrative Health & Wellness (CIHW), an in- and out-patient department serving hospital patients — namely oncology, cardiovascular, diabetes, urology, and gastroenterology — as well as caregivers and community members interested in prevention and wellness. In building CIHW, Julie brought a deep understanding of true customer-centricity, which she learned after spending 20+ years at world-class global consumer brands such as Harley-Davidson, Gap, Williams-Sonoma, Visa, and Jamba Juice.

As Director of CIHW and through her own cancer journey, Julie came to realize the importance of meeting patients where they are in life (rather than treating them as robots who need to be “compliant” with often emotionally and physically challenging treatment protocols) as the key to improving health outcomes and quality of life. And yet, in today’s healthcare environment, most health systems lack the time, incentives, training, funding and infrastructure to create holistic healing programs themselves, so patients miss out on proven healing solutions and providers, payers, pharma and employers capture only a fraction of the value available to them and their patients from the dynamic health ecosystem.

The vision for TruePath was born out of Julie’s desire to bring the healing powers of integrative medicine and supportive services to patients worldwide, wherever and whenever they desire, while simultaneously overcoming the limitations that physical programs embody by delivering healing care through a customer-friendly digital platform.

Julie Wheelan

Founder & CEO

Julie is a visionary entrepreneur working at the intersection of healthcare and consumer innovation. Her background spans 20+ years of global business experience where she led numerous game-changing marketing and strategy efforts for world-class brands such as Harley-Davidson, Gap, Williams-Sonoma, and Visa. Through her experience of working for brands known for having deep reverence for the customer, Julie gained a keen understanding of how to forge deep emotional (versus simply “transactional”) customer relationships.

Julie was diagnosed with stage 3.5 colorectal cancer in 2007 and, after undergoing an emotionally and physically challenging year of treatment, she emerged with first-hand knowledge of how the current healthcare system can better serve patients as well as the important distinction between “curing” and “healing”. Her deep desire to champion a new paradigm for patient healing led her to co-found and direct Marin General Hospital’s Center for Integrative Health & Wellness (CIHW) as a means by which to provide patients in her own community with more holistic healing care. Under Julie’s leadership, CIHW grew quickly and today provides numerous in-patient and out-patient integrative and supportive services for patients, caregivers, and community members, including nutrition counseling, exercise coaching, acupuncture, guided imagery, psycho-social counseling, therapeutic massage, music therapy, art therapy, patient navigation, and more.

Julie “passed the torch” on her role at CIHW a few years ago in order to start TruePath. She received an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a BA in Economics and Psychology from Northwestern. She is a frequent writer and speaker on topics related to healthcare and innovation, including “What Healthcare Can Learn From Harley-Davidson”. She lives in Mill Valley, CA with her husband and two sons.

Our Beliefs

Each patient is unique. Each path to healing is as well.

Good medicine is grounded in solid, evidence-based science, is inquiry-driven, and is open to new paradigms of healing.

Integrative medicine offers the promise of a good life, even though it may not be an easy life, or even a long life.*

There is such an important distinction between ‘curing’ and ‘healing.’ Curing is what a physician seeks to offer you. Healing comes from within us; it’s what we bring to the table. Healing can be described as the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual process of becoming whole.**

In changing the “terrain” of our bodies, we create the potential for altering the incidence and recurrence of certain diseases.

The hope of healing is always present. Even faced by an incurable disease, a person may still grow in such a way that, over time, the wound of their illness becomes a smaller and smaller part of the sum of their life.*

It is unethical to treat a patient for a disease without also supporting the patient in preventing recurrence or progression of that disease.
